AGA Oven Temperatures

aga oven temperature blog header at quince and cook

This guide explains the typical temperature ranges for different AGA models along with tips for checking heat levels and troubleshooting temperature issues. All values are approximate because AGAs use radiant heat from cast iron rather than fan-forced air.

A quick overview

AGA Section Typical Temperature Range Main Use
Roasting oven 220–240°C Roasting, high heat baking, grilling
Baking oven 170–190°C (some models 140–180°C) Breads, cakes, traybakes, pastries
Simmering oven 110–140°C Slow cooking, casseroles, keeping food hot
Warming oven 60–90°C Plate warming, resting meat, holding cooked food
Boiling plate 300–340°C Boiling pans, searing, fast frying
Simmer plate 200–240°C Gentle frying, simmering, sauces
eR7 full heat mode Roast 240°C / Bake 180°C / Simmer 120°C Electric model preset temperatures
eR7 low heat mode Roast 120°C / Bake 120°C / Simmer 100°C Energy saving setting
Bottom oven (on 2 or 3 oven models) 110–140°C Same as simmering oven
Hotplate effect on ovens Using plates can temporarily lower oven heat Important for troubleshooting

AGA oven temperatures

AGA cookers use stored radiant heat which means temperatures are steady but not identical to conventional fan ovens. Each oven cavity is designed for a specific heat level and the temperature varies by shelf position and model type.

2 oven AGA temperatures

A 2 oven model normally has a roasting oven at the top and a simmering oven below. The roasting oven is often around 200 to 240°C and the simmering oven is around 110 to 140°C.

AGA oven temperatures 4 oven

A 4 oven AGA usually has a roasting oven, baking oven, simmering oven and a warming oven. Approximate ranges:

  • Roasting oven: 220 to 240°C
  • Baking oven: 170 to 190°C
  • Simmering oven: 115 to 140°C
  • Warming oven: 60 to 80°C

AGA simmering oven temperature

The simmering oven is a low heat oven suitable for slow cooking, stews, casseroles and keeping food hot. Typical temperature range is 110 to 140°C.

3 oven AGA temperatures

Three oven models usually include a roasting oven, baking oven and simmering oven. Approximate ranges:

  • Roasting oven: 220 to 240°C
  • Baking oven: 170 to 190°C
  • Simmering oven: 120 to 140°C

AGA bottom oven temperature

On most 2 and 3 oven models the bottom oven is the simmering oven and will sit between 110 and 140°C.

AGA warming oven temperature

The warming oven on multi-oven AGAs is used for plates, resting joints and keeping food warm. It usually runs between 60 and 90°C.

AGA baking oven temperature

The baking oven offers a moderate heat suitable for cakes, traybakes, pastries and bread. Expect around 140 to 180°C depending on shelf height.

5 door AGA oven temperature

Five door AGAs follow a similar pattern to four door models but add an extra cavity, often for slow cooking or extra baking capacity. Roasting, baking, simmering and warming ranges remain similar to the 4 oven layout.

AGA temperature gauge

The heat indicator on the front of an AGA shows the stored heat level of the unit, not the specific oven temperature. For accurate cooking checks place an oven thermometer inside the cavity.

Checking temperature in modern AGAs

Controllable and electric AGAs often have selectable heat modes. Use an oven thermometer placed in the centre of a shelf to verify cavity temperature. Allow the oven to stabilise before taking a reading.

AGA dual control oven temperatures

Dual control models let you switch ovens and hotplates on and off separately. Standard full heat levels remain near 240°C for roasting, 180°C for baking and around 120°C for simmering.

AGA eR7 oven temperatures

eR7 models offer full and low temperature modes. Full mode: roasting 240°C, baking 180°C, simmering 120°C. Low mode reduces all ovens for energy saving.

AGA hot plate temperature

Boiling plates reach around 300 to 340°C. Simmer plates are cooler at about 200 to 240°C. These are used for pans, frying and searing.

AGA not getting up to temperature

Possible causes include door seals failing, the cooker not being fully warmed from cold, heat being lost through frequent door opening, or the hotplate drawing heat away from the ovens. Internal thermometer checks can confirm real oven temperatures.

Additional considerations

  • Heat is stored in cast iron so temperature changes take time
  • Shelf position influences cooking speed
  • Adding cold trays or opening the door drops the internal temperature
  • Recipes may need slight timing adjustment compared with a fan oven
